Welcome to my Homepage

The title

leben-ist-lernen is a German phrase that means: to live ist to learn.

Throughout the years I have experienced that learning takes place in many ways shapes and forms. You cannot not learn if you live your life to the fullest, taking an interest in everything around you.

My formal schooling experience

I have started my education in the Netherlands and because my parents are expats, I have lived in Germany since I was 6 years old. After some years in a German elementary school, I was educated in a bilingual (English/German) private international school (Gymnasium / international baccalaureat). For one year in between I visited a VWO school in the Netherlands, to refresh my Dutch language proficiency.

Taking charge of my own education

After all these formal learning experiences, I yearned to take charge of my own education, for which I have gotten permission of the German school authority who approved of my plans. I have always been someone who likes to learn by experiencing  and by experimenting with things as opposed to sitting in a classroom or learning from books.

Classical Education

My learning experience has not been confined to the subjects that I have listed here. I have aimed to be broadly, ideally universally educated and I like to consider the classic education of former times to be a role model for my own education.

Learning Experiences

For this reason, I have tried to attain learning experiences in many subjects to broaden my horizon, regardless of their practical use for my academic score. The learning experiences I refer to consist of travel to the places that held the origins of our civilization (like Rome and Athens) and to other countries to learn about their culture.

Personal Growth

I have also enjoyed mingling with different kinds of people: old, young, uneducated, researchers, social workers, idealists, rich, poor, people with different cultural backgrounds. I second the quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson: "Every man I meet is in some way my superior; and in that I can learn of him."

You will find some samples of my academic work and learning experiences in this internet portfolio.

Enjoy!
